Abstract
1295176 Pipe joint L BANIDES and J DEBEAURAIN 27 Feb 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 9741/70 Heading F2G A joint between two pipes is made by aligning the pipes end to end and spaced from one another, arranging a mould consisting of a metallic sleeve around the peripheral surfaces of the pipes, the internal diameters of the ends of the mould being smaller than that of the centre of the mould, placing electrically insulating rings between the ends of the mould and the peripheries of the pipes, moulding an insulating material within the space defined between the mould, the pipes and the insulating rings, the pipes having keys on their peripheries for mechanical locking with the moulded material. The keys on the pipe peripheries are preferably notches or cuts formed by grinding chiselling or punching, and they preferably extend in non-parallel directions (i.e. longitudinally and transversely). Alternatively the pipe ends may be flared or wrought collars or independent rings may be secured thereto (e.g. by expansion of the pipe therein). The mould may also be internally keyed. Fluid tightness while casting may be achieved by joining the pipe ends with a ferrule or adhesive strip, and an insulating ring may be used to separate the pipes. As shown in Fig. 1, the mould 12 is a split casting and an agglomerated sand ferrule 11 is removed after casting material 16. In the form shown in Fig. 2 (not shown), an insulating spacer (18) is inserted between flared ends (17) of the pipes. The casting material may be thermosetting or thermoplastic or "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark).
