Abstract

814,979. Making metal sheet with internal passages. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., BEISHON, R. J., and MANNING, I. July 1, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 13283/56. Class 83 (2). Metal strip or sheet with one or more internal passages is made by extruding metal through a die to form an extruded product having at least one passageway, inserting stopweld material in each passageway and then rolling the product to strip or sheet form. The metal which may be copper or aluminium, is first extruded through a die to form a slab with longitudinal passages. These passages are then filled with stopweld material in solid or powder form, for example, graphite, chalk, lime, kieselguhr, glass or ductile metal which does not alloy with the slab, or synthetic resins which decompose on heating, such as polythene, poly-iso-butylene or poly-methyl-methacrylate. Powdered materials may be lightly compacted into rod or strip form. After plugging the ends of the passages the slab is hot and/or cold rolled. The passageways are subsequently inflated by hydraulic or pneumatic pressure or, when the synthetic resins are used with cold rolling, by heating the strip to gasefy the stopweld material. The resulting passages may be cleaned if necessary.
