Abstract
800,588. Cooling electron discharge tubes. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. Aug. 10, 1956 [Sept. 28, 1955], No. 24624/56. Class 39(1). The external surface of an anode or collector electrode is provided with a large number of spines or protruberances, and is enclosed by a housing through which cooling fluid flows, a perforated baffle between the fluid inlet and the anode surface breaking up the fluid into a number of jets which impinge on the latter. Fig. 3 shows the canister-shaped anode 40 of a power valve, which is enclosed by a housing 42 with a fluid inlet 47 and outlet 48. Between the housing and the anode is a perforated canister 45, so that, since the fluid is supplied under pressure, a large number of separate high-velocity jets strike the anode. To increase the cooling efficiency, the outer anode surface is deeply diamond-knurled, as at 41. Fig. 1 shows a simpler form, in which the collector electrode 11 of a travelling-wave tube has a "waffle-iron" arrangement of projections 16 on its outer surface. The surface is enclosed by a housing 21, and the cooling fluid entering through inlet 25 is broken up into separate jets by a perforated disc 32.
