Abstract
870,446. Generating electricity by forcing fluids through magnetic fields. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 26554/56. Class 35. In a system in which electricity is generated by forcing a hot conductive gas or vapour through a magnetic field so that its kinetic energy is directly converted into electric current, the working medium is the coolant of an atomic pile. An atomic pile 1, which may be constructed as a latticed pile using uranium oxide not contained in cans and having graphite moderators, is cooled by inert gas, e.g. argon, flowing in ducts 2. The gas is ionized by its own radio-activity which may be controlled by treating part of the gas chemically. It is expanded to a high velocity and low pressure in a convergent-divergent nozzle 3 and passes at high velocity through magnetic field 4 (perpendicular to the plane of the drawing) between electrodes 5, 6, the latter of which may be coated with an emissive material. The remaining kinetic energy of the gas is used in a turbine 7 driving a compressor 10, and it passes through a heat exchanger 8 and cooler 9.
