Abstract
799,337. Rotary engines. WADE ENGINEERING, Ltd. Jan. 14, 1957 [Jan. 12, 1956], No. 1120/56. Class 110 (2). In a Roots blower or motor the heat capacity of the rotors 2 is reduced by building them up from laminations of sintered metal placed face to face along the axis of the rotor. The object is to reduce the maximum temperature reached by the shafts and bearings when the unit is stationary after a period of running. The laminations are each pierced by openings 12 to further reduce the volume of metal in the rotors which are driven from the shaft 8 by the keys 14, there being a number of keyways 16 in the rotor to reduce the area of contact and hence the heat transfer between the rotor and the shaft. In a modification the rotor is built of from plain flat laminations and in a further modification the laminations are shaped as a thin web with a thickening around a central hole and around the rim.
