Abstract
A porous mould used in slip-casting comprises sand and clay and is broken up to obtain the cast article. The sand is mixed with enough clay to bind the sand together when dampened with water. For example, equal parts of Albany sand, containing about 7 per cent clay, and ordinary silica sand may be mixed together. A mould made or such material may be used to cast thin-walled articles from a slip in which fine silicon particles are suspended in water. A mould made entirely of Albany sand may be used in casting refractory bricks from a silicon slip. Examples of particle sizes for sand and silicon are given.
