Abstract

797,824. Emptying tanks. JAY, K. W. Sept. 4, 1956 [Sept. 7, 1955], No. 27030/56. Class 21. [Also in Group XXIX] An oil or fuel tank for aircraft with a number of differently positioned outlets, has a gravity actuated valve for each outlet comprising a piston 23 movable over ports 21 in a cylinder 14 under the control of a tension spring 24 and a weight 26 attached to the piston by a flexible connector 27, the weight applying to the piston a greater force than the spring so that when the valve is in the vertical position, as shown, the piston is drawn down upon a stop 19b to close the ports 21. The weight 26 is housed within a perforated box 12 contained within the tank and is offset to one corner thereof whereby when the tank is tilted so that either of its sides 12A, 12B is at the bottom the weight 26 rests on that side and allows the spring 24 to open the valve. The valve is also opened when the tank is completely inverted but is closed when the tank is tilted such that either of the sides opposite the sides 12A, 12B is at the bottom owing to the fact that the length of the flexible connector 27 is insufficient to allow the weight 26 to touch either of those sides. A passage 23a in the piston 23 equalizes the pressures on each side of the piston. The inlet from the tank is through the perforations 12a in the box 12 and passages 20 in the valve casing. The outlet from the ports 21 is by way of an annular chamber 15 to a pipe 22a and this pipe may connect with other valves at other corners of the tank. In one embodiment four such valves are described at four corners of a tank whilst in another embodiment a valve is placed at each of the eight corners of a tank.
