Abstract

911,014. Valves. GUINARD, P. A. June 27, 1960 [July 7, 1959; Oct. 13, 1959], No. 22476/60. Class 135. An unloader or relief valve working under the action of the flow of fluid supplied to a utilizing apparatus by a pump includes a device responsive to flow which positively opens the relief valve when flow to the apparatus ceases. In the embodiment shown, the relief valve comprises a valve closure member 6, loaded by a spring 10 and normally closing on a seat 5. The flow responsive device comprises a diaphragm 21 loaded in one direction by the supply pressure in chamber 4 and in the other direction by the combination of a spring 29 and the pressure between the device and the utilizing apparatus. A fixed member 24 is provided with ports 26, controlled by a flow feeler 20 secured to the diaphragm, through which the fluid is supplied to the utilizing apparatus connected to an outlet 27. The feeler 20 carries a stirrup 30 and push-rod 31 for opening the relief valve. In operation, with the utilizing apparatus working, the diaphragm 21 assumes a position in accordance with the required flow and the relief valve is closed and operates as a normally pressure-relief valve. If the utilizing apparatus is closed and the flow to it ceases, the pressure on either side of the diaphragm is equalized and the diaphragm moves upward under the action of spring 29 causing the rod 31 to open the relief valve. Several outlets may be provided and the diaphragm may be replaced by a piston. In a further modification, the several outlets may be controlled by manually-operated valves arid a manual operation of the relief valve may also be provided. Several forms of loading arrangements for the relief valve are described to replace the spring 10.
