Abstract

797,177. Suction cleaning tools. HOOVER, Ltd. Aug. 9, 1956 [Aug. 22, 1955], No. 24383/56. Class 8(1). In a vacuum cleaner the suction nozzle 11 is attached to a bracket 12 carrying guide wheels 27 and the wand coupling 38 carries bails 34 pivoted on a shaft 29 of load bearing wheels 30 ; the shaft 29 is carried in slots 31 in the bracket 12. The thrust of the wand 42 is taken by the wheels 30 and on a hard surface the nozzle is maintained above the surface by the top 32 of the slot 31 engaging the shaft 29 whilst on carpets the wheels 30 sink into the pile and the nozzle rests on the surface until the bottom 28 of the slot 31 engages the shaft 29 when pressure is applied to the nozzle. The slot 31 may be inclined as shown at 46, Fig. 1. so that forward thrust on the wand causes the nozzle to be lifted. A spring 43 exerts sufficient force on the nozzle to prevent it from tilting when lifted from the floor. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the rear wheels 54 are carried by arms 51 fixed to the nozzle 11 and links 55 are pivoted to the axles of wheels 53 and load bearing wheels 58 carried by the bail 61 ; a recess 60 engages the axle 56 to limit the downward movement of the nozzle relatively to the loading wheels 58. The nozzle is connected by a flexible tube 40 to the wand 42, and may be fitted with a brush 17.
