Class 20(2) A supporting ring or arch in mines formed of overlapping U-section members 1, 2, Fig. 2, adjacent members being relatively inverted so that a flange 6 or 6a of one member lies between the flanges of the other member, comprises thickened edges 8 on the flanges, one of which is guided between an internal ridge 7 on the base 5 of one member and a flange 6 of the other member when the members slide relatively under roof pressure. The overlapping ends of the members are clamped by a stirrup 3, Fig. 3, having a stop 14 engaging the end of the member 2 and a wedge 4. Two sets of stirrups and wedges connected by bars may be used for each pair of overlapping ends. A tension band 11, Fig. 6, drawn over guide bars 12 fixed to adjacent flanges 6, 6a, may assist in resisting collapse of the arch under mine roof pressure. A stop 13 on one end of the band engages the end of one flange 6.
