Abstract
The water-repellent coating of a domestic ice-tray consists of polytetrafluoroethylene. The tray surface is first finely roughened, e.g. by anodizing if made of preferably sintered aluminium, and then coated with an aqueous dispersion of the repellant, the dispersion including a surface-active agent obtained by condensing ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with a longchain alkyl phenol. The dispersion may include an oxidizing acid such as chromic acid to improve the bond. The coated tray is then heated gradually to remove the water without blistering and then is heated at a temperature above the melting-point of the repellant, i.e. above 700 DEG F. The coating is then toughened and improved as to transparency by quenching in water. Two coats may be applied. Specification 796,587, [Group XIII], is referred to.
