Abstract
Stainless steel surfaces (e.g. flat rolled strips or sheets or architectural members) having a metal oxide coating, are further coated with an alkali metal silicate by spraying, dipping, roller or flow coating. The metal oxide may be obtained by heating the stainless steel in air (e.g. 450 DEG F. and above), molten salts or solutions, or oil baths or by electrolytic treatment, e.g. in sodium hydroxide solutions as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,957,812 The thicknesses of the metal oxide and silicate coatings are between 100 and 1000 <\>rA and not greater than 0.001 inch respectively. The coatings may be baked. The silicate is applied in the form of an aqueous solution which solution may contain a wetting agent, e.g. diamyl sodium sulphosuccinate and sodium lauryl sulphate. The strips and sheets may be cold rolled, annealed, pickled and polished before being coated. In the examples, stainless steel panels are cleaned with alkaline cleaner, rinsed, heated at 1000 DEG F. and above, cooled, dipped in, sprayed with or roller- or flow-coated with, a sodium silicate solution and baked. Specification 974,886 is referred to.ALSO:Stainless steel surfaces (e.g. flat rolled strips or sheets or architectural members) having a metal oxide coating, are further coated with an alkali metal silicate by spraying, dipping, roller or flow coating.
