Abstract

The tendency of viscose artificial silk to swell in water is reduced and the tensile strength of the silk increased by immersing it in a solution of a compound having the structure <FORM:0603881/IV (c)/1> wherein X is hydrogen or an alkali metal, and R1, R2 and R3 are hydroxymethyl groups, methyl groups and/or halogen atoms, provided that at least one and at the most two hydroxymethyl groups are present, after which the excess liquid is removed and the treated material heated to a temperature above 100 DEG C. Examples are given in which the compound employed is paracresol dimethylol, orthocresol dimethylol, paracresol mono-methylol and phenol, parachloride-dimethylol. Specifications 291,473, 291,474, [both in Class 15 (ii)], 425,032 and 445,891 are referred to.
