Abstract

Strip or sheet electrical grade silicon steel, which may have been coated with MgO or CaO powder and annealed in hydrogen at 2000 DEG F to form a complex orthosilicate glass surface, is passed through an aqueous slurry containing 6-23% (all percentages by weight) of colloidal silica, 3-15% of chromium trioxide and a small amount of wetting agent, sodium lauryl sulphate, to form an inorganic insulating film which is dried before baking at 1200-1700 DEG F. The strip then may be annealed in air or in a non oxidizing atmosphere. The deposited film is 0.05-0.12 mils thick and comprises 29-88% silica and 12-71% CrO3.ALSO:Strip or sheet electrical grade silicon steel, which may have been coated with MgO or CaO powder and annealed in hydrogen at 2000 DEG F. to form a complex orthosilicate glass surface, is passed through an aqueous slurry containing 6-23% (all percentages by weight) of colloidal silica, 3-15% of chromium trioxide and a small amount of wetting agent, sodium lauryl sulphate, to form an inorganic insulating film which is dried before baking at 1200-1700 DEG F.
