300,911. Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd., (formerly Metropolitan- Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd.), (Assignees of Gross. J. E.). Nov. 19, 1927, [Convention date]. Insulation; electromagnets. - Core plates for dynamo-electric machines and transformers, or similar magnetic plates' with an adherent insulating film, are coated with an aqueous solution of sodium silicate and one or more carbohydrate compounds or glycerine, with or without the addition of a filling material. The sodium silicate solution preferably has a specific gravity between 1.15 and 1.3 and for the carbohydrate ingredient sugar, starch or dextrin may be used. An example consists of 45 parts of sodium silicate, 10 parts sugar and 60 parts water. When the plates are annealed after the coating has been applied, the carbohydrates break down and prevent the adhesion between the plates which would result from fusion of the silicate if this were used alone. As filling materials, talc, silica clays, magnesia, mica and insulating oxides, such as those of iron, aluminium and magnesia may be employed. The coating solution is applied by spraying, dipping or painting and the baking is preferably effected on a conveyer which carries the sheets in about 25 seconds through an oven so arranged as to give a uniform temperature gradient up to between 125‹ C. and 150‹ C. at the back of the oven.
