Abstract
542,101. Lead alloys. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 9, 1940, No. 15040. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1939. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In the manufacture of insulators &c. a metallic member is connected to a ceramic body by spraying a matt glazed or roughened part of said body with an alloy including Pb, Sb and Sn, heating the coated body to a temperature less than the melting point of the alloy, submersing the heated body in a solder of a temperature greater than that of said body and less than the melting point of the alloy, bringing the metallic member adjacent said coated surface, and filling the intervening space with solder. The matt glaze may be formed by adding about 35 per cent. of pulverized aluminium oxide to theglaze material, and firing. An alloy preferably comprising 85 per cent. Pb, 10 per cent. Sb and 5 per cent. Sn is then applied by spraying, and the coated body is then heated to about 160‹ C. and tinned by dipping in a solder preferably comprising 50 per cent. each of Pb and Sn at 220‹ C. ; the metallic member, which may also have been tinned, is then applied and the intervening space filled with solder and after the latter has set, the parts are heated to about 220‹ C. to level off the solder.
