Abstract
579,735. Wire resistances. EXPRESS LIFT CO., Ltd., PARTRIDGE, J. H., and WELLS, L. E. W. July 3, 1942, No. 9200. [Class 37] [Also in Group XXIII] Resistance wire wound on a ceramic body is covered with vitreous enamel which binds it to the ceramic and has a coefficient of expansion somewhat less than that of the ceramic so that at room temperature the enamel is mostly or wholly in compression. The enamel used should not require for its application to the wire-wound ceramic body a temperature higher than 1000‹C. A suitable enamel comprises 40 to 55 per cent. of silica, 25 to 35 per cent. of boric oxide, not more than 6 per cent. of sodium or potassium oxide, and from 10 to 15 per cent. of barium oxide, strontium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium oxide, lead oxide, and fluorine. Small quantities of other substances such as arsenic oxide or nickel or cobalt oxides may be added. The solid powdered enamel is applied in stages to the ceramic made hot enough to melt the enamel when it comes into contact with it, the progress of the enamelling being continually observed. After the enamel has been applied to the wire-wound ceramic body the surface may be cooled by forcing a strong current of air over the surface of the enamel, so that when the enamel sets the temperature of the ceramic body is considerably greater than that of the enamel.
