Abstract

796,474. Stopping shafts in predetermined positions. COLLINS RADIO CO. Oct. 2, 1956 [Dec. 6, 1955], No. 30017/56. Class 80 (2). A shaft 9 which may be stopped in any one of a number of predetermined positions carries freely a continuously rotating gear 10 meshed by a driving gear 11 rotated by a motor, and also carries a stop disc 7 rotationally fast therewith and formed with a number of radial slots around its periphery for engagement by a pawl 5 pivoted on a fixed base 3. The pawl 5 is normally biased by a spring 14 to engage one of the radial slots in the stop disc 7, but energization of a solenoid 4 overcomes the bias of the spring to disengage the pawl from the stop disc, and engage it in one of a number of radial slots in an intermediate clutch disc 8 carrying balls 15 engaging frictionally at each side with the continuously rotating gear 10 and the stop disc 7, respectively. The stop disc 7 and the shaft 9 are thereby driven until the solenoid 4 is de-energized, so that the spring 14 is allowed to disengage the pawl 5 from the clutch disc 8 and re-engage it with one of the slots in the stop disc 7, to hold the shaft in a new position. The clutch disc 8 and balls 15 now rotate idly until the solenoid 4 is re-energized. Specification 660,939, [Group XXXVIII], is referred to.
