Abstract
1,198,467. Variable-speed gearing. SOC DE FABRICA D'lNSTRUMENTS DE MESURE. 16 Oct., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 47004/67. Heading F2D. An epicyclic stepped friction speed-reduction gear for' driving the shaft A of a magnetic register capstan from a motor M comprises sets (e.g. 3) (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) of planetary balls B 1 , B 2 &c. retained in P.T.F.E. cages C 1 , C 2 &c. freely mounted on the shaft A, each set of balls e.g. B 2 rolling between two plane spring- steel discs, one disc F 2 being fixed in a surrounding casing, and the other D 1 being rotationally fast with the preceding ball cage C 1 , the cages C 1 , C 2 , C 3 &c. being in series such that any one cage, starting at C 1 , may be locked to the shaft by a radial key R to effect a reduction ratio, which speed reduction ratios form a geometrical progression of inverse ratio 2, each ball cage unit running at half speed of the preceding unit. The drive from the motor M is through a roller G 1 or G 2 frictionally engaging a disc L carried by a member H having a face F o engaging the first set of planetary balls B 1 . The discs F 1 , D 1 &c. have a thickness of 4 to <SP>5</SP>/ 16 of a millimetre and the rotatable discs D 1 are set or glued on the P.T.F.E. cages which are separated by thrust roller bearings.
