Abstract

1283731 Variable-speed gearing SPYRO DYNAMICS CORP 1 Aug 1969 [2 Aug 1968 (2) 18 July 1969] 38647/69 Headings F2D and F2Q A right-angle drive comprises a rotatable balltoothed gear 65 and a rotatable face gear 81 having a spiral groove 82 in its face, the gear axes being at right-angles to each other and non-intersecting and disposed so that at least one ball 68 engages the groove 82. The balls 68 are retained in sockets in the periphery of gear 65 by ferrules 70, 71. In a modification, balls 90, Fig. 7, are retained by an outer race 96 which is prevented from rotating by its engagement with the periphery of a face gear 85. In an epicyclic gear comprising a sun gear 28 on a driving shaft 15, planet gears 30 on a planet carrier 27 and a toothed annulus 18 on an output shaft 17, the speed of the output shaft 17 may be varied by driving the planet carrier 27 from an electric motor 34 through a ball gear 20 and face gear 32. In a modification, a drive to a planet carrier 27<SP>1</SP> comprises a friction wheel 56 slidably keyed to a driving shaft 15<SP>1</SP> and engaging a face plate 48 on a rotary shaft 49 coupled to a spiral grooved face gear 32<SP>1</SP> which co-operates with a ball toothed gear 20<SP>1</SP>. Axial movement of friction gear 56, to charge the speed ratio, is effected by rotation of a screw shaft 53<SP>1</SP> by means of a knob 54<SP>1</SP>.
