Abstract
796,468. Rolling. INLAND STEEL CO. Aug. 28, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1956], No. 26264/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (4). In a method of rolling light-gauge steel sheet, tin-plate, &c. at least one of the work rolls has a concave contour so that the sheet is formed with a convex cross-section having a crown of at least 0.0005 inches. The rolls are cooled as by water sprays directed over the portion contacted by the work to prevent loss of concavity due to expansion. In one example, slabs of about 0.7-1.0 inch thickness are reduced by about 75 to 95 per cent to about 0.19 inch thickness in three stages, the upper rolls in each stand being about 0.004-0.006 inch concave and the temperature being maintained at 1600-2000‹ F. The strip is subsequently reduced to 0.08-0.093 inches thickness by flat rolls and is finally cold rolled.
