Abstract

796,307. Propelling ships. MACMILLAN, J. H. Oct. 1, 1956, No. 29853/56. Class 114. A water craft comprises a hull 10 formed with a stern and spaced sides 12, 14 in each of which there is formed a tunnel 30 opening into the side, starting forwards of the stern and converging inwardly towards the main axis of the hull whence they extend to the stern on each side of the axis, the inner surface of each tunnel progressively increasing in area above and below the axis of the tunnel from the starting point to the rear end thereof ; rotatable propulsive means, such as a propeller 26, is journalled in the hull and sited contiguous to the rear ends of the tunnels to rotate transversely thereof about an axis in the plane of the tunnel axes and to encompass these axes, the propeller drawing water from the opposite sides of the hull into the tunnels to form water columns that converge and exert a continually increasing pressure against the tunnel sides in front of the propeller to produce a primary propulsive action on the hull, the directed streams producing a secondary propulsive effect by the action of the propeller on them before they intermingle, each of the tunnels being separated from the bottom of the hull to ensure that no water is drawn into them from beneath the bottom. A fin-shaped member 40 level with the keel extends rearwards to isolate the tunnels from the space below the bottom of the craft and provides a mounting for a stem 44, Fig. 3, in which a rudder 42 is detachably mounted. Small propellers may be encircled by an annular nozzle 46 to enclose the propeller, the ends of the tunnels and the space between them. The device may be applied to craft having twin propellers.
