Abstract

Bactericidal detergent compositions comprise (a) at least one condensation product of one molecular proportion of an alkyl phenol, preferably containing 6-20 carbon atoms in the alkyl group(s) with 2-6 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide; and (b) at least one surfaceactive bactericidal quaternary ammonium compound. The preferred alkyl phenols from which the condensates of (a) are obtained are mixed octyl cresols and p-(a :a :g :g -tetramethylbutyl)-phenol, but several others are also specified. The preferred quaternary ammonium compounds are cetyl/oleyl trimethylammonium bromide, didecyldimethylammonium bromide and cetyl pyridinium bromide, but other examples are also given. The amount of (a) present may be 20-80 per cent, preferably 25-75 per cent of the combined amounts of (a) and (b). The compositions are suitably used in concentrations of 0.04-0.4 per cent. Sodium carbonate, nitrite and phosphates, sodium salts of ethylene diamine tetracetic and nitrilotriacetic acids, ammonia and primary and secondary lower aliphatic alcohols, such as ethanol, isopropanol and sec.-butanol, may also be incorporated and the compositions may be formulated as powders, pastes or fluids or as aqueous suspension or solutions.
