Abstract
795,364. Milk powders. MIL-KO PRODUCTS, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1955 [Feb. 17, 1955], No. 32327/55. Class 49. A fine powder of dried milk in which a substantial proportion of the lactose is in the anhydrous form is converted to a readily soluble powder of larger particle size having the lactose predominantly as the monohydrate by directing steam as a band across a thin, wide falling stream of the fine powder. With the apparatus of Fig. 1, spray-dried milk powder having 60 per cent or more of the lactose as #-anhydride is fed from a hopper 10 on to a conveyer belt 13 to fall therefrom at 21 as a thin wide stream, the falling stream is subjected across its full width to steam from orifices between projecting lips 23 in a pipe 22, a temperature of 190- 200‹ F. being attained, and the steamed powder is collected on a conveyer belt 26 and carried through a chamber 38 where it is dried, under agitation by paddles 41, in air at 150-180‹ F. to a powder wherein the lactose is less than 50 per cent #-anhydride.
