Abstract
631,217. Agglomerating ores. ERIE MINING CO. July 30, 1947, No. 20636. Convention date, June 10, 1946. [Class 82(i)] A process of pelletizing moist ore fines involves rolling a charge, consisting of such fines in the form of small masses, in an inclined rotary drum until the masses have been formed into ball-like pellets, and dusting them immediately prior to the termination of rolling of the pellets, with a small amount of dry ore fines, preferably about 5 per cent based on the dry weight of the pellets. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in the Figure which comprises a rotary drum divided by a screen 12 into two parts namely, a part 25 in which small masses are formed by rolling on a bed of moist fines, and part 26 in which moist masses, freed of undersized pellets by screen 12, are dusted by fines delivered from a chute 15. Undersized pellets and the required dusted pellets are collected respectively in receivers 13 and 14. The dry fines are preferably applied to the formed pellets at a position where the pellets cease being carried round by the drum and start rolling back. The fines used for dusting may consist of material finer than 6 mesh and 80 per cent of which is finer than 65 mesh and may be obtained by screening from the product produced by heat treating formed pellets at an indurating temperature.
