Abstract
Sodium tripolyphosphate of bulk density 0.4 to 1.2 g./c.c. and of relatively long hydration time is compacted at below 350 DEG C. to form non-friable particles and the particles are ground to yield sodium tripolyphosphate of bulk density between 1.0 and 1.15 g./c.c. having a hydration time of less than 3 minutes. The starting material may be that obtained by spray drying or rotary kiln drying an aqueous solution and preferably has a U.S.A. mesh size from -14 to +270. The compacted particles may be briquettes of size about 1 1/4 X 3/4 X 1/2 inch. Fines removed after the compacting stage and after the grinding stage are recycled to the compacting stage, and a fraction coarser than +20 mesh from the grinding stage is recycled to the grinder. The product preferably has a particle size of -20 to +100 mesh.
