Abstract

In the preparation of ceramic pastes (see Group V) from carbonaceous shales, which have been subjected to controlled drying (see Group XIII), screening to separate the powder, and selective crushing of the screening oversize, the mixture of pulverulent material is further mixed by using paddles with proportioned quantities of water, preferably effected by separate weighings, followed by a mixing operation using grinding wheels, both the latter mixing operations, which may be performed independently or controlled automatically to operate discontinuously charge by charge being continued up to respective predetermined power consumptions when the resulting paste has reached the corresponding predetermined degree of consistency. The mixing may be followed by densification treatment carried out by rolling and followed by a final mixing operation at controlled power consumption during which any correction in the consistency of the paste is made by adding regulated quantities of water or powder.ALSO:Ceramic pastes are prepared from black and grey carbonaceous shales, especially those from washers, by first subjecting the shales, preferably free of any coarse iron material such as weathered nodules of clay iron-stone or scrap metal, to controlled drying (see Group XIII), then screening the dried shales to separate the powder, selectively crushing the screening oversize, e.g. using hammer crushers, and mixing the crushed product with the powder from the screening to form a pulverulent material, and finally subjecting this material with water to two mixing operations (see Group II) which are each continued up to respective predetermined power consumptions when the resulting paste has reached the corresponding predetermined degree of consistency and is reading for shaping. The first mixing operation is by means of paddles where the pulverulent material is mixed with proportioned qunatities of water preferably effected by separate weighings; this is followed by a wheel-mixing operation, both operations being preferably automatically controlled to operate discontinuously, charge by charge. These mixing operations may be followed by densification treatment carried out by rolling and followed by a final mixing operation at controlled power consumption during which any correction in the consistency of the paste is carried out by adding regulated quantities of water or powder. The corrected paste may be extruded in a screw moulder to supply either facing products or divided products in the form of cigar shapes for a piston moulder or slabber.
