Abstract

1,130,235. Clay treatment. WATTS, BLAKE, BEARNE & CO. Ltd. 15 Dec., 1966 [31 May, 1966], No. 24109/66. Heading C1A. Clay is treated by a method that comprises adding an organic coating substance to the shredded form of the clay and disintegrating the mixture into a powder. The organic substance may be stable at the temperature at which the clay is dewatered by heating, in which case the organic substance is added to the clay before dewatering and disintegration, but if the substance is unstable at this temperature, it is added after the clay has been dewatered. The organic substance may be octadecylamine present in an amount up to 2À5% by weight of the clay. In Fig. 1, shredded moist clay from the hopper 1 is carried on the conveyer belt 2 and is mixed with the organic substance, in powdered flaked or slurry form, which is fed from the hopper 3. This mixture is then disintegrated and dewatered in the disintegrator 6 and the powdered product is carried into the bagging hopper.
