Abstract

1417475 Agglomerating hydrous sodium silicate STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 13 Sept 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 43037/73 Heading C1A A material comprising at least 75% hydrous sodium silicate is agglomerated by vigorously agitating particulate hydrous sodium silicate (SiO 2 : Na 2 O wt. ratio 1À6 : 1 to 3À4 : 1) so that the particles are forced together, at 130- 230‹ F. and a loss-on-ignition at 1470‹ F. of 18- 30% for long enough to increase the size of substantially all the particles. Up to 12% water may be added during agglomeration. Mere agitation in pans or kilns is not sufficient, there must also be a compacting action by balls, rods or mixing screws. The material may be preheated before entering the agglomeration zone and may be partially dried after leaving it which further increases the bulk density. The product may be graded for size, fines being recycled and oversize ground and re-cycled. The starting material may be obtained from a sodium silicate solution by spray-drying or by drum-drying and grinding.
