Abstract

794,498. Extrusion-machines. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd., and HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T. Nov. 22, 1955 [July 1, 1954], No. 19360/54. Class 87(2). [Also in Group XXII] A method of extruding metals or synthetic resins to form tubes, rods or cable sheaths comprises forcing the extrudable material through the die by at least two pairs of opposed hydraulic plungers 6, the individual rams of each pair being operated simultaneously and the pairs being operated in succession to produce continuity of flow through the die. The press used for sheathing cables comprises four hydraulic rams 2-5 mounted on a yoke 1 with the horizontal rams 2, 4 working alternately with the vertical rams 3, 5. These rams are preferably controlled as described and claimed in Specifications 695,012 or 770,871 to provide uniformity of flow. The container bore 7 in the extrusion head 8, Fig. 2, communicates through conical passages 20 with a common mixing chamber 10 from which a plurality of passages 14 lead to the extrusion gap. The conical passages 20 tend to resist back-flow of extrusion material into the container bores when the corresponding rams are withdrawn for re-charging. To further resist back-flow a substantial residue of billet material is left in the containers after extrusion therefrom and/or the container bores are of tapering cross-section as described and claimed in Specification 770,872.
