[Also in Group V] In the extrusion of material from a hydraulic press having two or more billet containers 5, 6 from which the billets are extruded in succession by hydraulic rams, the billet residue remaining in its container when the extrusion is changed over to another container is approximately one third to one half of the initial mass of the billet so as to reduce or eliminate any tendency of the billet material to flow back into the first mentioned container during the change over. To further increase the resistance to back flow, at least a portion of the bore of each container is tapered with the maximum diameter of the tapered portion at the die end of the bore. The tapered portion may commence at a point mid-way along the bore as in the container 5, or at a point one third or one quarter from the die end as in the container 6. In the latter case the passage 15 leading to the annular mixing chamber 7 is larger than the passage 15 of the other container 5. When a new billet is inserted into a container, pressure is applied by the ram to upset the billet and to force it into the residue of the previous billet before extrusion of that billet commences. The mixing chamber communicates through apertures 12 with an extrusion orifice 10 formed between inner and outer dies 8, 9. The rams may have the same diameter and stroke or they may have dissimilar dimensions. In the latter case the hydraulic control means for the rams is arranged to ensure that the same volume of material is always delivered to the mixing chamber per unit time. These control arrangements may be as described in Specification 770,871. The invention is applicable to the extrusion of solid sections, tubes or for the sheathing of cables using billets of non-ferrous metals or alloys, particularly aluminium, or synthetic resins.
