Classes 120(2) and 120(3) Long yarn packages are produced without affecting the axial length of the balloon by winding the yarn on a package support comprising nested coaxial inner and outer rigid members movable axially relative to one another to permit extension of the support so that the package is built on both members. A hollow spindle 8 is rotatably carried by a rail 10 which is moved downwards by a chain 11 as the yarn package is built. Passing through the spindle 8 is a plunger 21 supported in a rail 23 and rotated by a tape 24 and whorl 25 keyed to the plunger 21. There is a splined connection between the plunger 21 and spindle 8 for rotating the latter. Guide collars 29 on the plunger 21 are a sliding fit inside the inner of two nested package tubes 36, 37 which abut against shoulders on the spindle 8 and lower collar 29. Bayonet or other detachable connections may be provided between the outer tube 36 and the spindle 8. As the outer tube 36 descends during package building, the plunger 21 and inner tube 37 do not descend until the outer tube 36 has almost been covered with yarn and the tubes 36, 37 have reached their full extension, whereupon the plunger 21 also begins to descend by reason of an adjustable stop 34 contacting the rail 23 and pressing it down against the pressure of a spring 31. In another embodiment, the whorl 25 is keyed to the spindle and the plunger takes its drive from the spindle. According to' the Provisional Specification, the package support may consist of more than two nested tubes.
