Abstract

793,862. Columns; beams; foundations. MAIN. F. C., and KING, M. C. Jan. 2, 1956 [Oct. 6, 1953], No. 27361/53. Classes 20(2) and 20 (4) A frame construction for multi-storey buildings comprises columns 1, Fig. 2, interconnected by beams 2, 3, the columns being of laminated construction having one, or more, inner elements 4 and an outer element 5 on each side of the inner element or elements, the elements 5 being approximately as long as the distance between floors so that the beam 2, 3 may be mounted between the ends of elements 5, and the elements 4, 5 being in the form of pre-stressed reinforced concrete planks. As shown the floor beams 2 have bifurcated ends 8 which rest on the upper ends of the elements 5. The tie beams 3 each consist of a pair of pre-stressed concrete planks 9 connected together by spaced bolts 11. with spaces if necessary, the ends of beams 3 being connected to the beams 2 and elements 4 by channel shaped cleats 10 and bolts 12, Fig. 1, passing therethrough. At an outside wall the ends 8 of the floor beam 2 have cantilever extensions 20 which with those of adjacent columns form supports for an outside wall At internal columns, not shown, the ends 8 of two beams 2 meet at the centre of the column. The foundation comprises a rough foundation 16, an ordinary foundation 15, and a reinforced concrete slab 17 on which rests the base of element 4 and two short outer elements 5A. The foundation is reinforced by bars 18. The element 4 extends to 14 midway between the ground and first floors whilst elements 5A extend to the underside of the ground floor tie beams 3 and floor beams 2 and are grouted at 19 to the part 15 of the foundation. In a modification the tie beams are single and are attached to the floor beams and columns by bolts and angle-shaped cleats
