A cable guide comprises a frame a (plan view) mounted over an access aperture g to a ship's hold and a roller e pivoted mounted in the frame, the cable passing from an auxiliary winch over the roller and being connected to the main lifting cable which passes down through the hatch in the hold so that a load suspended on said lifting cable can be moved horizontally. As shown, roller e is a steel tube carried by wooden roller d mounted upon bearings f upon fixed spindle b.
