Abstract
724,964. Stowing &c. cargo in ships. HART, W., and TAYLOR, J. S. March 11, 1953, No. 6674/53. Class 113 (1). [Also in Group XXX] To facilitate stowage during loading and unstowing during unloading, an auxiliary hatch 29 is disposed adjacent each cargo hatch 4 and the arrangement repeated on each deck vertically below the auxiliary hatch on the main deck, the auxiliary hatches serving for the passage of a stowing cable 30 secured at one end to a stowage winch 25 on the main deck above the auxiliary hatch and passing downwards to the deck being loaded or unloaded where it passes through a snatch block suspended, from some convenient beam to the sling, &c., of the cargo to be handled so that the stowage winch can be used to drag the sling, &c., over the deck; the arrangement reduces or eliminates rubbing of the main hoisting cable against the hatch coaming. Additional snatch blocks may be used to guide the stowage cable into the desired direction, these being suspended from holes bored in suitable places in the deck beams, &c.
