Abstract

793,107. Valves. BYRON, E., and TOPHAM, A. E. May 2, 1956 [Feb. 5, 1955], No. 3476/55. Class 135. The closure meinber 5, Fig. 6, which cooperates with the seat 4, is provided with a transversely arranged operating spindle 6, Fig. 2, embodying a cam 10, on each side of which is a cross-piece 13; the ends of the latter slidably engage studs 14 extending from the back of the member 5 whilst compression springs 15, Fig. 6, surround the studs. The cross-pieces 13 are of saddle form to enable the shaft 6 to rotate therein. The ends of the cross-pieces may be joined or formed to overlap to engage a common stud on each side of the spindle. The shaft 6 is rotated by a lever 9, Fig. 2, carrying a spring-loaded plunger 19 adapted to engage holes 20 in the valve body to index the open and closed position of the valve; the plunger head has a notch 25 coacting with a lug 24 on the spindle boss 23. When the plunger 19 is manually retracted and turned to hold it out of the holes 20 the valve may be actuated. The lug 24 may be bored to receive the link of a padlock. In operation, the first 90 degrees of spindle rotation places a flat part 12, Fig. 6, of the cam 10 against the back of the closure member so that the springs 15 act to draw the latter axially away from the seat 4; during the next 90 degrees of movement the closure member 5 is rotated with the spindle until it assumes the open position shown. A projection 17 on the member 5 prevents the latter being turned beyond the fully open position. The reverse operation of the spindle effects quick closing and positive seating of the closure member 5.
