Abstract

<PICT:0792761/III/1> Separation of ethylene and ethane from a mixture containing methane and hydrogen leaving the head of a low temperature fractionating column 26 (see Group XXVIII) is effected by feeding the mixture through a duct 34 into an absorption column 37 supplied with oil from a reservoir 66 through a duct 69, coolers 53, 44, 64 and a duct 65. The undissolved light gases leave through a duct 40 and the C2-enriched oil is fed through ducts 52, 54 to a fractionating column 55 from the head of which the C2 hydrocarbons pass to a further fractionating column 79 whilst the lean oil is returned to the absorption column 37. The absorption oil comprises a C4 to C6 hydrocarbon fraction containing cyclohexane, pentane cyclohexene, benzene or toluene or a mixture thereof.
