Abstract

In a process for producing town's gas from a hydrocarbon such as light petroleum, the hydrocarbon is separated into a lighter and a heavier fraction and at least part of the heavier fraction is reacted with air and steam in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a nickel base catalyst, to produce a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide which is carburetted by with the lighter fraction. Preferably the gas produced from the heavier fraction is cooled and washed with the hydrocarbon to effect the carburetting and the separation of the hydrocarbon into the two fractions. Only a part of the gas produced from the heavier fraction may be washed with the hydrocarbon, this part then being mixed with the uncarburetted portion of the gas to give a gas of the desired calorific value.
