Abstract

1,236,164. Separating hydrocarbon mixtures. H. NEWBY (Universal Oil Products Co) 19 May, 1969, No. 25387/69. Heading B1L. [Also in Division F4] Separation of a C 4 fraction containing 1.3- butadiene substantially free of C 3 H 4 i.e. methyl acetylene and propadiene, from a normally gaseous pyrolysis gas stream at an elevated pressure, e.g. between 13.6 and 20.4 atmospheres, and containing mostly hydrogen, together with C 1-5 hydrocarbons and a minor proportion of a C 5 to 209‹C fraction, is effected by feeding the pyrolysis stream into a first depropanizer column 11, withdrawing gaseous effluent hydrogen and the C 1-3 fraction therefrom at 12 and liquid bottoms at 13, feeding the latter into a debutanizer column 14, withdrawing at 15 liquid bottoms containing the C 5+ fraction from the system, withdrawing at 16 a gaseous overhead fraction containing a C 3+ fraction and C 3 H 4 hydrocarbons and passing it into a secondary depropanizer column 17 maintained at below 107‹C and at 1.7 - 13.6 atmos below the pressure of column 11, withdrawing at 19 a gaseous C 3 and C 3 H 4 fraction, and withdrawing at 18 the product C 4 fraction containing butadiene substantially free of C 3 H 4 hydrocarbons. The product withdrawn at 18 is passed to a further column (not shown) in which butadiene is extracted by a solvent, e.g. acetonitrile whilst effluent withdrawn at 19 is added to the feed entering column 11.
