Abstract

1333776 Ethylene production BRITISH GAS CORP 17 Nov 1971 [19 Nov 1970] 55102/70 Heading C5E Ethylene is made by (1) cracking the non- aromatic portion of a hydrocarbon feedstock, e.g. naphtha, in presence of hydrogen to produce a mixture of ethane and methane under such conditions that the proportion of ethane is maximized; (2) separating the ethane and cracking it to produce ethylene and hydrogen; (3) recycling recovered hydrogen for reaction with further feedstock. Hydrogen from the stage (1) product can be recovered with hydrogen from the stage (2) product by separating aromatics from stage (1) product and combining the remainder stage (1) product stream with the product stream of stage (2) and separating the combined streams to provide hydrogen for recycle, methane, ethane for feeding to stage (2), ethylene, and a residue of heavier hydrocarbons. The combined streams may be separated in a fractionation system comprising demethanizer, de-ethanizer and ethylene/ethane splitter. This system may be operated under pressure so that expansion of the overhead product of the demethanizer is used to provide self-refrigeration for separation of the hydrogen and methane.
