Procedure for the separation of ethylene from ethane, particularly when ethylene and ethane are in mixture with methane, H2, CO, propane, propylene, propyne, propadiene and small amounts of C4 and heavier hydrocarbons, characterized in that it comprises the steps of : a) subjecting the mixture to an operation selected from distillation, separation and sudden expansion, obtaining a light product that contains all the hydrogen and CO in the initial mixture, substantially all methane, 20 to 80% of ethylene and ethane and vestiges of hydrocarbons with 3 carbon atoms, and a heavy product made up of residual hydrocarbons; b) refrigerate the light product in one or several steps to a temperature below -100ºC, separating a gaseous phase that contains mainly hydrogen and in minor parts methane and CO with traces of ethylene and ethane, as well as one or more liquid phases that contain substantially methane, ethylene, and ethane with lower amounts of higher components; c) feed the liquid phase or phases.
