Abstract

792,632. Sampling during hammer drilling. AKTIEBOLAGET SEPARATOR. Dec. 20, 1955 [Dec. 20, 1954], No. 36447/55. Class 58. [Also in Group XXIII] In sampling minerals and rock during hammer drilling, all the detritus from a selected length of the bore 2 is recovered as a sample by feeding a flushing liquid, e.g., water, into the bore through a central channel in the bit 45 and conducting the liquid and entrained detritus out of the bore and into a casing 15 through the space between the bit and a surrounding tube 4 sealed in a wider entry portion 3 of the bore by an elastic, e.g., rubber, ring 5. The liquid is deflected by a baffle 14 through an outlet 16 into a bucket 31, carried in a funnel 27 slung from studs 25 on the casing, overflows through holes around the upper part of the bucket and is deflected by a flange 38 on a detachable funnel resting on the bucket into the funnel 27, from which the liquid passes into a centrifugal separator 48 having a removable rotor, in which detritus escaping the bucket is collected. Separated liquid leaves by an outlet 49. The detachable funnel has radial vanes on the outer surface of its spout to prevent turbulent flow inside the bucket. Located below the overflow holes in the bucket are one or more closable holes through which liquid can be drawn off when flow into the bucket ceases. The funnel 27 is then slung from lower studs 41 so that the bucket can be removed. The detritus collected in the bucket and rotor constitutes the sample. The baffle 14 has a hole for the bit. In order to prevent liquid creeping along the bit, compressed air may be blown along it from nozzles 20 located near a sleeve 24 through which the bit enters the casing. The latter may be supported by one or more legs 18, preferably, adjustable in length. The bit 45 is held in the chuck 44 of the drilling machine 42 and flushing liquid is fed into the chuck through a tube 46.
