Abstract

1,021,736. Centrifugal separators. P. M. VAN DER MEER. April 5, 1963 [April 11, 1962], No. 13579/63. Heading B2P. An apparatus for separating into its components a mixture of a first liquid and a heavier second liquid and/or a heavier solid comprises a generally closed vessel 1 having through its wall 2 a passage 6 provided with an inwardly tapering collar 9 within which is arranged, for the supply of the mixture under pressure, a nozzle 12, Fig. 2 (not shown), having its end face substantially coplanar with the sharp inner edge 10 of the collar and defining therewith an annular passage whose cross-sectional area is equal to that of the nozzle bore 13. The annular passage widens as at 14 and communicates through ports 25 with the interior of a hood 16 provided with a liquid discharge pipe 17 and an air vent 18. A tube 7 mounted in the passage 6 extends downwardly into the vessel which is normally closed at its bottom by a valve 5. Pressure gauges 20, 21 indicate respectively the pressure of the feed and that of the liquid in the vessel. When treating contaminated oil, the vessel and the tube 7 is filled with the oil up to the underside of the collar 9. Further oil is then pumped through the nozzle 12 and issues from the flared end thereof as a jet. It is stated that the jet, on meeting the stationary oil in the vessel, curls upwards and, in doing so, the heavier contaminants are thrown downwardly into the tube 7 by the action of centrifugal force while the purified oil portion of the jet escapes through the annular passage 14 towards the discharge pipe 17. To facilitate the downward flow of the contaminants through the tube towards the bottom of the vessel 1 oil is allowed to escape through a conduit 22 the opening of which is controlled by a valve 23 to create a downward current through the tube 7.
