Abstract

1,109,693. Separating entrained liquid from gas streams. SOCIETE ALSACIENNE DE CONSTRUCTIONS ATOMIQUES DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS ET D'ELECTRONIQUE "ALCATEL". 2 June, 1965 [5 June, 1964], No. 23519/65. Heading BIT. Entrained liquid particles are removed from a gas stream by directing the stream through a converging nozzle, which accelerates it to almost sonic speed, on to a wall 2, whereby the liquid particles break on and drain from the wall, while the velocity of the gas after it impinges on the wall is considerably reduced to minimise re-entrainment. The wall 2 may be smooth, rough or covered by metal fibres 3. The arrangement shown is attached to the high pressure side of an oil sealed vacuum pump, whose volumetric flow rate on the outlet side decreases with the pressure on the vacuum side. Spring loaded valves 4-7 open at different pressures, so that as the flow rate falls individual nozzles are taken out of operation, whereby the velocity of gas in the remaining nozzles remains sufficient to effect separation. Nozzles may be of different diameters.
