Abstract
1,231,344. Spray producers; sampling molten materials. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 23 May, 1969, No. 26554/69. Headings B1X and B2F. [Also in Divisions C6, C7, H3 and H5] Apparatus for the analysis of molten materials comprises an analysis device, atomiser means 11 for extracting material in particulate form from a melt, a conduit 12 located downstream of the atomiser means along which a stream of atomising gas and material particles will flow to the analysis device and means for providing a gas barrier free of said material particles between said stream and the inner wall of the conduit. The means may comprise a gap 22 between the atomiser and conduit through which gas 23 is drawn, or the atomiser and conduit may be integral, the conduit having inlets for pressurised gas in the wall thereof. Alternatively the wall of the conduit may be shaped to a venturi pattern, the annular atomising gas inlet surrounding the material tube 16 optionally being subdivided by a ring. The apparatus may be used in the analysis of metals as described in Specification 1,116,052. The material may be passed to plasma jet apparatus, the analysis device being such as to analyse the arc produced.
