Abstract

887,493. Mixing solids and liquids. STAMICARBON N.V. Oct. 20, 1959 [Aug. 8, 1958], No. 25608/58. Class 86. A continuous discharge apparatus for mixing solid particles with a liquid separating medium of specific gravity greater than that of the lightest particles to be separated comprises a tank 151 with a lower tapering portion 152 and bottom outlet 153; an axially arranged tube 14 opens into the lower part of the tank. The solid particles are fed by a conduit 143 cuts the funnel-shaped upper part 141 of the tube 14, into which separating medium is also fed from conduit 142. Additional separating medium is supplied externally of tube 14 by conduit 155. The diameter of the tube 14 and the rate of supply of the separating medium from conduit 142 are selected so that the downward velocity of the mixture in tube 14 exceeds the rising velocity of the lightest particles. Similarly the size of the annular passage 156 and the rate of flow of separating medium from conduit 155 are selected so that the downward velocity in the passage 156 exceeds the rising velocity of the lightest particles. The size of the passage 156 is adjusted by altering the depth of intrusion of the tube 14 into the tank by means of adjusting screws as at 145.
