Abstract

1,135,913. Pneumatic sifting. MIAG MUHLENBAU UND INDUSTRIE G.m.b.H. 21 Feb.. 1967 [23 Feb., 1966], No. 8209/67. Heading B2H. In an apparatus for pneumatic sifting of loose material, e.g. for the separation and cleaning of grain crops, the material is caused to drop in a veil-like manner in a main coarse fraction sifting region against upward flowing sifting air which is subjected, before entering the main sifting region, to a pressure drop and, after leaving the region, to a pressure increase and a subsequent continuous acceleration and, finally, to a deflection and a subsequent expansion whereby a medium fraction is separated out. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical housing 1 to the bottom of which material entrained in sifting air is fed through an axially adjustable pipe 3 having a flared end 23. A baffle 4 mounted above the pipe 3 has a passage 5 through which the material is projected into a chamber 6 formed in the lower part of a frusto-conical insert member 11 in the upper part of which is provided an expansion chamber 12. A conical baffle 22 in the chamber 6 assists in deflecting the upward moving material downwards on to the upper surface 7 of the baffle 4 which is provided with a step 21 for uniform distribution of the material. The main sifting region 8 is formed by the annular space between the baffle 4 and the housing 1 and a resifting region 10 is defined by the longitudinally tapered annular space between the member 11 and the housing 1. The space 20 between the flared pipe portion 23 and the baffle 4 provides a nozzle causing a pressure drop in the air before it enters the region 8. The diameter of the lower end of the member 11 is smaller than that of the baffle 4 in the region 8 so that as the air enters the region 10 it slows down and its pressure increases. On leaving the region 10 the air is sharply deflected by means of a baffle ring 18 into the expansion chamber 12 where a medium fraction separates out. The air and the fine fraction flow via a hood 15 and a pipe 16 of adjustable flow cross-sectional area to a separator for recovery of the fine fraction. In modification, the material may be fed from above on to the surface of the baffle 4 and the sifting air blown or induced from below through apertures in the housing.
