Abstract
847,097. Sampling borings during well drilling. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. Jan. 14, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 1320/57. Class 58. In sampling borings produced during well drilling, a shaking screen 19, Fig. 1, receives, through a pipe 18 from the drill hole, a mixture of borings and mud. The mud passes through the screen into a tank 14, from which it is returned to the drill hole. The borings are guided by a flow-regulator 20 into a sample catching and washing device 21 comprising a supporting frame 22, Fig. 3, a housing 25 provided with one or more side openings 32, a removable sample basket 33, a pipe 28 through which wash water is fed into the housing and a funnel-shaped pan 29, which receives wash water overflowing through the opening or openings 32 and directs it into an outlet pipe 31. The housing and basket are, preferably, rectangular in cross-section and downwardly tapering, as shown, but they may be cylindrical. The flow-regulator may comprise an inclined table 47 on which are pivotally mounted, about threaded pins 48, baffle plates 51 and 52, which can be clamped in selected positions by threaded cranks 38. The table 47 may be an extension of the screen 19. In an alternative construction, an extension of the screen 19 is provided with an opening, through which the borings pass into the device 21, and the size of the opening is regulated by one or two slidable plates.
