Abstract
539,140. Centrifugal separators. JAHN, A. R., and JAHN, R. C. Sept. 27, 1940, No. 14627. [Class 23] A centrifugal separator for separating fine particles of substances, such as starch, chalk, china clay, or coal, from water, consists of an outer tapered drum 15 with an inner cage 28 carying a helical member 33 and rotated slightly faster than the drum. The cage on the shaft 7 is driven by the pulley 9, while the drum 15 is attached to the annular plate 12 and end plate 10 and is driven by the pulley 8. The outside of the drum 15 carries a cylindrical surface 16 which is supported between three rollers 17, 18, 19. The end of the cage 28 is secured to a conical feed tube 30 to which material to be treated is supplied by the tube 31. The material flows through the machine and is thrown out to the periphery of the drum; it reaches a depth determined by the plate 12 which acts as a weir. The water flows over this plate into the collector 13 from which it is drawn off. The suspended particles lie against the wall of the drum 15 and are carried to the small end by the member 33 which consists of rubber strip held in brackets 32. The particles reach the casing 35 from which they are removed by the conveyer 36. Holes are made in the brackets 32 and the rubber oozes into them to hold the strip in position.
