Abstract

297,914. Sunderland Forge & Engineering Co., Ltd., and Blair, G. July 26, 1927. Density separators; discharging. -A rotary conical bowl 16 with a horizontal axis has an internal spiral 39 for the conveyance of solids from the entrance at the large end of the drum to the discharge at the small end; the separated liquid is discharged at the large end. A short cylindrical part 17 is added to the wide end of the bowl 16 and has an inturned flange 18 with an inner cylinder 24 supported by ribs 26 radiating from a sleeve 27 loose on the shaft. At the other end of the separator the sleeve 45 has a flange 44 carrying vanes 53 and inclined blades 54 which operate inside the closed fixed casing 51. The sleeves 45, 27 with the combined structure of the bowl 16 and flange 44 are driven from the pulley 15 through gearing 50, 49, 47, 46 while the spiral 39 and the distributing spiral 28 are secured to the shaft 10 and driven directly from the pulley. The material is fed in through the hopper 1 and the distributor 24; the separated solids are fed forward by the spiral 39 and pass into the casing 51 from which they are freed by the blades 54 and discharged through the opening 55. The vanes 53 help to seal the gaps between the moving and the fixed parts. The separated liquid is discharged through openings 34 in the flange 18; it passes into the fixed casing 19 from which it travels through the pipe 20. A sliding plate 35 can be moved over each opening 34 and secured by a serrated washer and bolt; this alters the radial position of the edge of the opening and so varies the level of liquid in the bowl. The cylindrical portion 17 of the bowl is provided with centrifugally operated valves 56 which only close when the machine runs above a certain speed. This prevents the discharge chamber for solids from being flooded with liquid when the machine slows down before stopping; the valves 56 open at low speed and the liquid discharges into the casing 19. In a modified construction the cylindrical part 17 is replaced by a conical part and the remainder of the apparatus is modified accordingly.
